I can remember my father going to work one day - he was a plumber and his job was to cut off the mains water and gas from the houses that were bombed. So he was out in the city during most of the blitz. On this particular occasion, my dad was working when the sirens sounded, and a policeman told him to get down a street shelter, it was one of the brick ones. For some reason my dad refused, and it was a good job he did, because seconds later the shelter was blown to pieces!
