I was 10 when the war started so I was still at school. It was a 20min walk to school as I lived in Quarry Bank.
The most outstanding of my memories from this time was the night the land mines were dropped on Quarry bank.
My Father was at the time in the Liberal club in the High Street. This was where both of the bombs were dropped. Luckily for everyone the bombs didn鈥檛 explode.
After they had discovered that the bombs had been dropped, one either side of the road, my father and all the others from the club started evacuating the people.
This was about 10pm at night. He didn鈥檛 arrive home until 12.30 and realised that he hadn鈥檛 thought to evacuate us!
We were all still fast asleep in bed!
We were immediately woken up and taken to our Grandmother鈥檚 house in Old Hill. We had to stay there until the bombs had been defused a few days later.
My brother had been working nights at that time and when he tried to get home the next morning he wasn鈥檛 allowed to enter the town. He was determined to get his sleep so he snook round through the woods and skulked through the back streets until he found his bed!
