There were very few cars so we walked everywhere and went to local beauty spots.
We would take bottles of cold tea with us and sandwiches and play in the hedgerow.
The countryside was there for us to explore.
No-one panicked if you were out all day.
Everyone looked after each other and we felt safe and secure.
We all sat at night making peg rugs.
We would cut up old clothes and peg the rugs.
We would use sacks as the backings.
We used these at home on the linoleum since there where no carpets.
You were very inventive in those days.
As girls we would make our own perfume with petals in water.
When the tiny English roses were about we would stick them on to our nails.
The clocks went back for Double British Summertime, so at 11pm it was as light as it would have been at 9pm.
This was introduced to conserve resources - you didn't need the lights on so early.
