DIANA INCLEDON-WEBBER born 1932
In 1939 my family consisted of my father Godfrey Stanley INCLEDON-WEBBER, my mother Angela Florence INCLEDON-WEBBER (nee Lacey), myself and my sister Elizabeth.
We were living in Leamington, Warwickshire at the time but when war was declared we were on holiday at Beach Cottage, Croyde Bay. I remember hearing the announcement over the radio in the car park.
Daddy went off to the war, leaving us in Beach Cottage. We moved to Saunton Down and after a year we moved to St Brannocks House Braunton., next to\ Granny, Helen Margaret INCLEDON-WEBBER at Buckland Manor, where I now live.
I remember we had a small air raid shelter but I don’t think we ever sheltered there — we used to go to a cupboard under the staircase.
We had a cow to supplement our rations and I remember making butter pats.
My sister and I first went to school at Barton Gables, Woolacombe, which is now Watersmeet Hotel, then to Hereford House, Ilfracombe before moving on to Stadley Knowle , Torquay as boarders.
As my mother was Catholic, she had extra petrol rations to take us to church in Ilfracombe on Sundays and whilst we were there we also learnt to swim in the swimming pool.
Later on there were lots of American soldiers based at Lobb Camp, Saunton Road, who used to give us sweets — quite a treat!
