I was called up when I was 18. I was delayed for a few months, until November, as I was a spare fireman, come cleaner, on the railways. After my initial training at Cattrick I was sent to Korea as a member of the Royal Signals. I wasn't very keen to go, knowing there were hostilities, but you had to go where they sent you. I enjoyed serving over there. I was only allowed to serve one winter because of the severity of it. It could be as much as 20 or 30 degress below, in winter. We were near a river up on the 38th parallell. It had 50 gallon drums strung across it on a wire rope as it was so fast flowing to help when people were swimming. We used to swim there in the summer. During the rainy season there would be an extra river that joined up with it but in the summer season there would be a sandbank. I was there for about 14 months
