Percy Lovell served in the York and Lancaster Regiment from April
1940 to July 1946 in India. He experienced attacks from the Japanese
and the terrible conditions of the jungle during World War 2.
Some of Percy's experiences related to the mule, a cross between a
horse and a donkey. People today know that a donkey can make quite a
lot of noise, but a mule makes twice as much sound especially in the
morning this made the Japanese know where to shoot the gun fire. So
the vetenary surgeons would remove the voice boxes of the mule to
prevent this.
Another experience Percy had was when he was detailed to make a
landing at a place called Ru-y-wa on the West coast of Burma. When he
landed, behind the landing gate was a big reel of canvas that was to
be rolled immediatly when the landing gate was dropped. But
unfortunatly they landed in a mango swamp, so the gate could not be
lowered, so therefore they was ordered to climb over the canvas,
and drop into the water. This swamp was black and the men sank to
waist height into the water. The smell was awful and the swamp was
filled with leaches. When they reached dry land the Japanese open
fired on troops but their ammunition and weapons were useless so they went
to ground. They had a lucky escape because two R.A.F Hurricanes
appeared and silenced the Japanese.
Percy described the conditions of the jungle while he was at war.
He encounted many different sorts of amimals. There were many
white ants which would bite through the the ground sheets. There
were also bull ants which are 10-20 times larger then normal ants.
Other examples of animals were scorpians and bull frogs which were
very big.
It was a pleasure for Percy to tell me the exciting stories about
World War Two.
