Our village of Cervinara was surrounded by mountains. We found the safest place to be was at the top of the mountains (which was a very long trek) to get away from the bombings in the village. Towards the end of WW2 - we had no food and slept in an old shed on the floor - no blankets.
After about two weeks all these young men appeared at the top of the mountain shouting for us all to come down as the war had ended. We all came back down the mountain to a roaring sound of loud noises, which was the celebrations of hearing the great news. Everyone was so excited - I can sometimes feel it when I remember the past.
The streets were full of American and English soldiers and my memory of the soldiers handing out chocolate to everyone will stay with me forever - music was playing and everyone was happy.
