I was stationed in Egypt for a bit and I did eventually end up in Tobruk. There were all sorts of rumours sliding around that we were going to go to Benghazi ...we never went...We were based at a landing strip - we didn't go to very many airfields - when we were in Malta we went to some, and we had two of our boys killed in Malta. I was stood by the hangar door and watched them running down the road they were about the same age as me and typical of the caper that I used to be up to because they were galloping along together on the grass verge on the side of the runway and they kicked a tin on the grass verge. There was a big bang and that was the end of them....it was a maconachie bomb and I had a very good job there shovelling them up it wasn't a very nice endeavour...they gave us a blue gentian violet in a bath - water didn't look good, but they put you in a bath and pushed you under, and apparently if you had any skin breaks or anything it was to avoid any possibility of disease or something.
