I was 11 years old & Geoff was 14 we were in the heeley picture house on dec.13 when a notice appeared advising people to leave because the sirens had just gone.Ntaurally with girls in the audience staying seated we couldn't leave. When Mickey Rooney had finished his antics we left the pictures only to find a load of women and kids crying in the foyer,"whats up",our Geoff said, thi droppin' bombs was the reply. Then we heard the loud screaching as a bomb plummited to earth, hopefully without our name on it.
We ran like the wind up Chesterfield road only to suddenly see Ponsfords windows bulge out, which brought us to a sudden terrified standstill.Geoff collected hits wits and ran the other way towards Heeley railway bridge.A lorry was parked nearby so we dived under it,and felt reasonably safe.Suddenly I felt myself being lifted into the air and knew for certain the end had come, but no,it was the biggest, loveliest copper I've ever seen who had picked me up and put me into the air raid shelter under the railway arch. Geoff meanwhile was still lying under the lorry, unconcious we found out later, when another copper had pulled him out from under thinking he was dead.
