This story was contributed by Mrs E Bevis, nee Olley
In May 1944 I was a first year student at Brighton Training College.
During May of that year a big tented establishment was erected on the Downs above Brighton. It consisted of many marquees including a Reception tent, a Medical tent which included a Delousing Area, a Dining and Sleeping Area and a tent full of clothing.
It was established because it was presumed that many French refugees would cross the Channel from the French coast and would impede the passage of our troops on D-Day.
About a dozen of our first year students who had passes in Matriculation in French (like GCSE) were chosen to act as Runners between the refugees and the staff in the camp. Fortunately, owing to the speed of the advance in France, the camp was not needed.
I have never seen this establishment mentioned in any army archives of D-Day. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can confirm my story.
