Bernard Coward was born on the 22 July 1918. He was 21 when the war started.
He served in the Merchant Navy as the head radio officer. The Merchant Navy's job was to send and receive supplies to other countries. The only place my Grandpa hasn't been to is China and Japan.
Sometimes my Grandpa was worried when U-boats (German submarines) attacked the convoy and sometimes he was scared when the German Air Force dropped bombs near his boat.
He wasn't that scared when he heard that they were at war but, like everybody he was very happy when he heard that the war had finished.
