W.W.2 Army Colleagues 鈥 Anyone still about who knows me, Bill Gower, Home Town, Canvey Island, Age 87. Joined up February 1940, initial training barracks at Woolwich RAOC. Mated up with Harry Gardner and Andy Anderson. Next move for all of us was to a driving training school at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Followed by a group posting to 12th Army Field Workshop R.A.O.C. at Stirling, Scotland. Andy was with me, palled up with a Scot lad named Malcy Stevenson, a good looking lad resembling a facial features like Paul Newman the film actor. He had a sister named Kirsty with similar good looks; she sent me parcels of cakes.

Then we all moved to Newmarket, Suffolk, then on to Chard and Ilminster, Somerset. List of names of this 12th Army Field Workshop were mostly Scot lads, good quality mates, I have a group photo of this lot.

A bunch of us were posted to Aldershot, mated up with Ginger, Tatty, Johnny Marshall, had some fun with ATS girls, one in particular named Stella, home town Luton. I was then posted to 6 Command Workshop REME Colchester and was made up to Full Corporal, from there on to Trade Testing Centre, Ashton-Under-Lyme and from there to REME Workshop at Charminster 鈥 from there got attached to American Forces to prepare for D-Day, but did not take part in the landings, was drafted to India instead on ship 鈥淨ueen of Bermuda鈥 in India was put in the 2nd Division. Went all over the place, came home a year later after Japan surrendered. One particular mate was Johnny Evans, Home Town Liverpool. He was the funniest comedian in the British Army - we had a million laughs.

Come on someone, get in touch, I cannot be the only one left!

Dear Bill (may I call you that?)
I enjoyed your story. A pity I'm not one of your mates from Army days! You have a good memory - all those men - and girls. Must have been fun! I hope you will get some response from them. Have you more stories? Look forward to reading them.
Regards,
Audrey Lewis
