锘緼 Wartime Story
by
Barbara Walker
Sometimes there are always humorous stories to relate. This one happened when I was in the top class at the Linton Junior School in the year 1940. Over the months we were all given drill in case the unforeseen happened;. so in case of emergencies we would have to run home keeping as close to the wall or building as possible. We had never had to do this but this particular day, it was in late morning, when Miss Kemp who taught in a lower class came dashing in through the classroom door looking pretty shaken, red in the face and calling out at the top of her voice, 鈥淭he Germans are coming, the Germans are coming!鈥 All knowing our drill, we formed into lines, collecting our coats on the way out. Looking out through the high school windows, we could see the sky was filled with parachutists and we did not stop once we had made our way outside!
I ran and ran close to the wall until I reached home, a fish and chip shop. .My parents could not make it out at all; there had been no warning by siren.....
Later in the afternoon I was back at school, (I think my parents thought I had been playing truant!). Everything came to light once we arrived back at school. The parachutists were our own boys practising; some landed in the girls鈥 playground, some in the boys鈥 playground and the rest in the churchyard!
Poor Miss Kemp! I felt so sorry for her, but what happened could have been the real thing.!
