Farmer in plane dilemma.
Shortly before the war, I lived in Wiltshire, near Somerset. Close to my home in Hullavington there was a large airfield on which pilots were being trained. The training occurred night and day.
On one occasion, one plane landed short of the airfield, on the farmer鈥檚 field close by. The farmer was asked to move his manure heap in order to replace the plane back onto the air field, otherwise it would have needed dismantling. There was one man on the aerodrome that could fly the plane and land it back on the airfield. The plane, Avro Anson, landed back on the airfield safely. The father of one pilot鈥檚 reported in local newspapers of how the death of his son, surname Stanton Hope, was due to the pilots being over trained. There were many incidents that occurred as a result of the pilots being too tired. Unfortunately it remains unknown whether or not these incidents were due to faults with the planes or the over trained pilots.
