The Americans at the airbases near us, such as Parham and Debach, used to take all their rubbish to a dump at Kettleburgh. As children, we used to go up to the dump and see what we could find. I have to say that the Americans threw a lot away, and we would often find tins of jam and other food. I have heard that when an airman didn鈥檛 come back, his kit was all packed up and dumped. So we would often find personal effects like nice fountain pens and things.
One day I found a really lovely decorated tin. My brother and I couldn鈥檛 open it, but I wanted the tin, so we took it home. I remember proudly showing it to my parents who kindly opened the tin for us. Inside, it was packed full of condoms!
Well, we didn鈥檛 know anything about that sort of thing at that age, and just exclaimed 鈥淏alloons! Can we blow them up!鈥 They were swiftly taken away. I have to say that I don鈥檛 know what happened to them, and I never did get the tin back!
