I was stationed at Ballyhalbert in Northern ireland, 12 miles from the border, working as an operations room WAAF. We were told to be very careful about German infiltrators. The OP room was 90ft underground, and we worked 2 hours on and 2 hours off - the air got very stale.
There was a shortage of men on the base and so the girls were put on sentry duty, and given guns.
One night when I was on duty the C.O. came storming down. I needed to see his ID, I said, The C.O. said, "You know who I am!" "I need ID," I said.
"What are you going to do about it?" he asked.
"I'll hit you with my gun!" I replied.
"Why not shoot me?" he asked. I explained that I didn't know how to shoot the gun; he told me to report to him in the morning.
The next day the C.O. asked if I would like to learn to shoot; I said I would, and I was sent on a course to learn how to shoot. Better than using the gun to hit people with, I suppose.
