when i was a little girl at night the siren would go off. My mum used to tell us to get down the air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden. My brother who was 7 years older than me, would never get up and used to stay in bed while the air rade was going on. Needless my mother was going frantic.
Sometimes we would just get down the shelter and the all clear would sound, back to bed we would go only to be woken a few minutes later to return to the shelter.
On our air raid shelter we would grow vegetables. My dad who worked for the local council at Fishponds as a carpenter used to go out in the morning work all that day. Then do ARP duty all night, work all the next day and then return home.
I used to have to carry my gas mask to school every day in a small case over my back.
I remember once when there was a raid i heard a noise like loads of bricks colapsing it was 6 houses reduced to rubel in a road furhter over from where i lived. The road was Priory road.
Also we had a Incendiary bomb go right through the roof 2 houses away from where i lived.
I can remember the black curtains up at every window if there was a chink if light you would hear the warden shout "PUT THAT LIGHT OUT".
