This story has been submitted to the People's War website personally by Don Tempest of the Lancshomeguard and added to the site with his permission.
At the outbreak of World War 2, we lived in Dalton-in-Furness, quite close to Barrow. The Germans began to bomb Barrow quite regularly, at night, using the very powerful Land Mines which were dropped by parachute.
When the raids were on, my Father was out on duty as an Auxillary Fireman, and my mother and I stayed at home.
Mother refused to go down the Air Raid Shelter because, 'They were a bit dirty'!!
So what she and I did during the bombing raids, was sit under the kitchen table, playing Ludo.
This went on very well for quite some time and I was very good at Ludo.
Then one night, we were sat under the table during a raid, and suddenly one of the mines landed quite close to us and the explosion from it blew open our back door and the kitchen door. I must say that it was very 'Exciting'.
Needless to say, after that we started to go down the Air Raid Shelter.
