My next door neighbour was in the Navy during the war. He was on a big battle ship and was a Petty Officer. When he was home on leave he was absolutely petrified of the air raids.

He used to hold on to me and he used to be shaking. He used to tell me mot to be frightened yet he was terrified! He always said he would rather be safe on his ship than in a shelter.
