I was little during the war so it's hard to remember a lot. We lived in Jamaica. My parents told me it was hard to get supplies and there was no butter, sugar or rice.

Someone used to come round and remind us to put our lights out. We used to soak oranges and grapefruits to make a little oil which we could burn. There were also fling insects we called 'peniwally' (I'm not sure of the spelling. I think they're what you might call gloworms. We used to collect them, and put them in a bottle for a bit of light so parents could see to their children at night.
