This story has been submitted to the People鈥檚 War website by Peter Quinn of the Lancs. Home Guard, and has been added to the site with Rosemary Hartley鈥檚 (daughter) permission.

My mum was the Managing Director鈥檚 secretary and she arranged for a works van to collect her mother鈥檚 Singer sewing machine and put it in a corner of her office at the factory. In her spare time, between her normal office duties, she made sleeping bag liners for all the men who were on fire watch duty. She personalised them by putting in each man鈥檚 name and, amazingly, must have made about 140, over a couple of months.
