During dogfights in the sky above us, we would see pilots and bomber crews bale out of their stricken airplanes.

A few would land in the town. If we saw one, we would rush to the Police Station in Lady Well in the centre of Dover. If the person was a German he would be escorted by the Home Guard with fixed bayonet. A couple of us would be standing on the other side of the road, left finger under nose, right hand held high and shouting 鈥淎dolf, Adolf, for you the War is over鈥.

One now thinks of the episodes of Dad鈥檚 Army and the famous Captain Mainwaring鈥檚 remark 鈥淒on鈥檛 tell him your name Pike鈥.
