I was seven years old when I was evacuated, via Morocco, to London in 1940. I had lived in Gibralter with my mother, brother and sister -- but it wasn't safe, hence our evacuation.
You can read about our adventures in London in the story, "Evacuated to London".
But one of the things I remember in particular was returning to Gibralter, where my father had remained as a dockyard worker throughout the war. In the four years, I had only seen him for one four week period.
We took the Union Castle Liner from Southampton to the Rock. And there he was to meet us -- wearing a flat cap! I suppose he was more interested in seeing mum! But to me, he seemed a complete stranger. It wasn't a particularly happy event. Things were never the same again. Looking back, something was missing in our relationship, because of that four year gap.
