We had a rough mongrel dog — Jinks — who provided a useful service throughout the Blitz. He could hear the sirens long before we could. We would be sitting around the table when Jinks would suddenly leap up, run out into the garden and dive into the shelter. We would know that a raid was imminent and would just have time to boil a kettle of water for tea in the shelter
