I joined the Wrens in April 1942 and came out in 1969. Was in South Africa from 1943-46 - so hardly saw any of the war. I was very fortunate in that respect.
Did my training in London at Westfield College, then went to Scotland (Roseneath, near Helensburgh, on board a ship). Then the Americans took over and I went to HMS Lochilart, then from there to South Africa.
I took a troop ship through the Med, and red Sea, to Durban, ,then to Cape Town by train. Stationed in Cape Town during the war. I was in the stores section - kitting people out. It was almost like the war wasn't going on.
