I joined the Naafi ON THE 9TH February 1942 in Sheffield.
My first camp was Norton Balloon Centre. we had one day of per weeek and our wages were 拢1 per week.
I had to catch three buses to get to Sheffield from my home which was in a village Nr Barnsley,it was called Higham.
I then moved to Cannon Hall which was located nr Barnsley the Rifle Brigade and the King's Royal Rifles were stationed there.
Whilst i was there i celebrated my 21st Birthday and the boys from the band and all my friends came to the party which was held at my father's public house the Hermit Inn at Higham.
I volunteered to go down south for D-day we went down south on the 4/4/44 down to a camp called Five Oaks at Billingshurst near Horsham.
We had soldiers coming and going all thge time they were Waterproofing the vehicles then going down nearer the coast with them. Then another lot would come and take their turn. We had a Mobile Canteen alloted to us and we went out each day visiting the other camps in the area.
The first day i went out with it we went to Slinfold, we parked up and when we pulled the shutters up, who was waiting there to be served but the Boy's from Cannon Hall who we had been serving before all the way back up there in Yorkshire.
I stayed down there for 15 weeks and got a lovely tan which lasted a whole year.
The last place that i worked was Endcliffe Hall in Sheffield .
I came home after VE day and was on holiday in Blackpool on VJ day.
I enjoyed my time in the NAAFI.
Who knows someone might read this who remembers me..

Posted on: 19 March 2004 by lizzies

Hi, I loved reading your story in the Naafi, my mum still tells me stories of her Naafi time, the good laughs, the dances.
Mum who is 80 this year was at Hilly fields, Mitcham Road Barracks, and finally at Biggin Hill. Regards Lizzies.
