I lived in Lewisham during the war with my 3 brothers and one sister and our mother, we went to Morden Terrace School in Lewisham, we were on our way home one lunchtime, as the school was going to the Lewisham Hippodrome that afternoon to see Where the Rainbow Ends, as some of us was walking along Thurston Road. Lewisham we suddenly saw an aeroplane flying very low, following the route of the railway line towards London, we thought it was one of our planes and stopped to look, we could see the pilot then suddenly he fired at us, my brother's pushed me to the ground and fell on me, my eldest brother badly sprained his ankle, there were as lot os shouting, but by then the plane had gone, and we realised it was German. When we made our way home and eventually to the theatre we learnt that Sandhurst Road School in Catford had been bombed and many children killed, the school was near that railway line too. I was telling some friends about this a couple of years ago and how you never forget, when one of the other ladies present who I had got to know, said I remember that I was there too! The pilot was so visible he must have realised we were only children, fortunately none of us was injured.
