My mother, 80 years old Joan Kavanagh, paid her respects at Leigh's War Memorial on Sunday the 9th of November 2003. That day she was paying her respects to the war dead. She also reflected on the role that she and her BICC colleagues had in raising funds for the freedom of the Russian people. In February 1942, her efforts were rewarded with a thank you letter from the Prime Minister's wife Clementine S. Churchill.

In the letter Mrs Churchill wrote "From all over the country similar donations are reaching me. They show the vivid and intense concern of the citizens of Great Britain for the freedom of the Russian people and for the suffering so silently and unflinchingly borne by them. I send you my heartfelt thanks for your help."

The letter was signed 'Yours sincerely, Clementine S. Churchill' and is one of my Mother's proud possessions.

Message 1 - Lady Churchill

Posted on: 18 November 2003 by Phil Heath

I was a boy of 9 when the war was declared. My friends and I put on childrens concerts, Fancy dress competitions and anything we could think of to raise money for Mrs Churchill's Aid to Russia fund.
After many months of effort we managed to raise 拢2 11s and fourpence which we had converted into a postal order and sent to London.
Some time later a letter arrived thanking us and signed by Mrs Churchill of which we were very proud. Unfortunatly the letter had been lost over the years, but the memory of it will never fade.
Phil Heath.
