My Name is Anne Broderick. I鈥檓 87 year old. I was 26 when World War 11 broke out. I worked in Carlisle in a munitions factory. I made parts for fighter planes on a production line, the factory was just beside an RAF airfield, which made it a potential threat from German bombs though it was never hit. I started work at around 7am-8am. It was fun to watch the planes taking off. I lived in a lodging, which was about a half an hour walk from the factory. I lodged with another lady who had a little boy, but I had no children. Her husband was away fighting and my husband was a POW in Japan. I did not see him again until well after the war. When he returned home he was in bad health and was never quite the same. It was very lonely for me, we weren鈥檛 allowed to meet the airmen because it distracted from the war effort. I didn鈥檛 like going to the air raid shelter, it was scary hearing the anti-aircraft guns and bombs in the distance.
As told to the student鈥檚 of Churchill Community College on Friday 28th November 2003.
