My father was a tank driver throughout the war and spent time in France, Northern Africa and Italy. Whilst in Africa they were warned that Churchill was about to arrive and ordered to get into "full battle kit" for an immediate inspection. He went on to say that men dropped like flies in the heat as Churchill apparently decided to reschedule his visit to later in the day without reference to anyone. Apparently the men lost a lot of respect for him as a result.

Hi Rob
Welcome to the site and many thanks for your entry.
Would you happen to know what Tank unit your Dad was in when Churchill made his visit?
Best wishes
Ron

Message 2 - Churchill in North Africa

Ron,
Don't sweat it as it was not the 4QOH as the great man visited them on 20th August '42 prior to Alam Halfa Battle and told them that they were about to strike an unforgettable blow against the enemy.. the fact that it was his old regiment probably ment that the rest of the Brigade were standing in the hot sun all day awaiting him !The 22nd Armed Bde and the 23rd armed Bde's were both involved in that particular Battle under "PiP' Roberts and Alec Gatehouse !
