Then the doodle-bugs arrived. Being halfway between the coast and London the RAF had a field day pouncing on these rockets and several were shot down or blown up in mid-air close to the village. I remember watching one such encounter when two fighters attacked a doodle-bug, damaging it and making it change course to such an extent that it turned round and headed straight towards me. Fortunately it turned round again, disappeared over a hill and blew up. Shortly afterwards I was evacuated to Cardigan (West Wales) and spent six very happy months there, unlike some unfortunates.
