I was 12 year's old and remember the speech by Neville Chamberlain
Mum and Dad were upset they kept the Red Gate Inn in Dresden. I was 11 and passed the 11+ and went to Longton High school, there were art lessons at the Sutherland Inststitute and we had only lady teachers at the school. The Woodwork classes included making a table and you could buy the table to take home but the teacher hammered my table and said it wasn't good enough to take home. English classes were also there.
There was a row of shops opposite the library with a launderette and a cake shop. I bought a cream bun and tried to bring it into school by the science teacher caught me
The school in 1941 had no room for aan air raid shelter so we went to Thisley Hough school for girls 1/2 day every day.
Dannylow Cinema's with " Freddy Jones" from Longton was in Stoke.
My aunt in May Bank was bombed but around Longton we were quite lucky and no bombs were dropped.
French sailors at Trentham Park helped us practice our french. At 18 I was called up at 18 in 1945 in RAF and stationed in Egypt.
Bayoneted rifle practise which could be quite dangerous and we were given a hand grenade which we had to practise throwing.
There was guard duty in Egypt which was to watch german prisoners of War. it took 10n dyas to reach Egypt.
Once I fell down a hole while escorting a German prisoner and he helped me out. They were well looked after. Also search light duty as we had problems with locals pinching supplies.
I came out of the RAF and met my future wife who worked in a tax office and we married in 1950 in Dresden church.I worked in MEB for 36 years.
First day at Padgate near Warrington I had a tin plate ,knife and fork.and we had a meal of meat ,mash and lots of gravy
I remember having a penny Oxo with bread at home in Red Gate Inn . At the ale houses in Dresden people used to queue when one particular ale house opened. There was pianist in the smoke room which everyone enjoyed
