The Carter family lived in Blackheath Colchester 1937 -1960.
The nearby Cherrytree Camp was occupied by many different nationalities. Australians were the most boisterous.
Talk was of bitter fights between AUS's and ASA (USAAF - Army Air Force) in Colchester Town rather than in war zones.
Our front gates were lifted off and put to one side by Aussies returning to camp. No aggro against civilians.
As a 12 year old, upon the sound of machine gun fire, our small gang rushed to gun site opposite camp to talk to Aussie W Bren-gun who has fired at a lone Luftwaffe aircraft flying very low homewards. Low to avoid detection.
