One afternoon 8 friends and I went to Grays shore, south of Woodham Cement works to play on an old delapitated jetty. While we were there a doodlebug came over from the Kent side of the Thames heading straight for us. At the last moment it vered off and we watched as it narrowly missed a tank landing craft coming down river, and saw the scorch marks along the side of the craft as it turned around Grays Reach. We didn't see any explosion, and I still wonder if it is still down there. Some of my friends who were with me were my brother John, Tony and Len French.
