When I first lived in Nottingham, we were bombed out at Chilwell, so we had to leave to come back to the city centre. We then got shrapnel through the roof and had to move to Radford. It was scary moving all the time — I was only about 6. Because of problems with school places I was sent to Bentick Road Annex. When we had the air raids we had to use the shelters. We used to knit for the armed forces. One day I had a letter from one of the men I’d knitted for, thanking me for the scarf and gloves — it was lovely. The headteacher sent for me to tell me about it — I was so proud and when I told my Mum she was too.
