I can remember starting school with a gas mask when I was 5. It was Reddal Infants school in Birmingham. The shelters were under the playground and when the sirens went off we used to go into the shelter and sing ten green bottles.

I can also remember seeing the sky when Coventry was bombed aned it was red in colour. And I remember going into Birmingham and the city was just flattened. There was an old bomb somewhere which had been kind of hollowed out and people were putting money into it, obviously to help people I think.

Ms Betteridge told this story to a People's War volunteer and understands how it will be used and our terms and conditions.
