I was 8 years old when I was evacuated to York. The day we went was one of the saddest days of my life. To have to leave my Mum, Dad, two brothers and a sister, and to see my Mum and others on the kerb edge crying, was heart breaking.

However, we went, and arrived at York. Some people made us welcome, but not everyone did. I was billeted with a kind lady. She spoilt me. But some evacuees were told to go home, even by children.

After two years away I came home to my family. I saw my Dad cry when he saw me. But my welcome home present was a baby sister, Anna, and to this day we are sisters and great pals.
