Well, I was in barracks in Folkston in VE Day. When we head that peace had become, we all thought we were going to go home, but we were on post the next day, we went upto the main office, and we were told that we couldn鈥檛 get out of the barracks, everybody was rejoicing, but we were told that if we didn鈥檛 go back to our huts, we could be done for rebellion, so we all went back and that was the end of it. That was our VE Day!
We were posted the next day and that was the end of it, we were posted, somewhere in the UK, but I can鈥檛 remember where because there were so many posts. Before the end of the war I was in Bistor, in the ordinance core in Oxfordshire. When we got home and it was all over, it was all different, it had all quietened and I鈥檇 missed it all! But that was being in the army, you did what you were told. I鈥檓 still doing what I鈥檓 told now!
I enjoyed the army days, I wouldn鈥檛 have missed it. You have plenty of friends and mates, you did a lot of hard work, but on the evenings and weekends, you had fun. It鈥檚 different to now. I don鈥檛 know why, but there was friendship and comradeship. I don鈥檛 think those days will come back. That鈥檚 all I can say.
