During the war years I lived at 19 Diana Street, my mother lived next door. I worked at W. H. Smiths in Waterloo Street as a cleaner. We had an air-raid shelter in the backyard, which I had to use quite often, though I sometimes went into my mother's shelter. My husband was stationed at Durham, I can still remember his number
Private Purvis 4461073
Durham Light Infantry
If he was allowed a day pass I would get the bus through from Newcastle as often as I could afford to, just to see him for a couple of hours.
On V.E. Day we had a party in Diana Street, we had cakes and jelly for the bairns and sndwiches of ham, sausage and brawn. I can't remember who provided them because meat was still on ration. We had a wind up gramophone, and played whatever records we had. The music would slow down as the gramophone ran down, until someone wound it up again. We all sung along to the popular war songs.
I had saved my clothing coupons so that I could have a pair of nylons for the party. We sang and danced all day. I can recall everyone was very happy and we were all kissing and hugging each other.
