This memory is from the early part of the war, I think. I must have been seven or eight at the time, living in Bexley in Kent with my parents and my younger brother Michael.
I simply remember my mother hearing the bombers flying overhead -- and realising that we had the washing out on the line! She told me to nip outside and bring it in. Why? She didn't want it to attract the bombers' attention!
I suppose it seems such a dangerous thing to have done -- but my mother just didn't see it that way. Her generation knew what to do. It was their second war, after all.
