These incidents took place somewhere which you might think was not exactly in the frontline of German attacks, Bettws-y- Coed North Wales! But they did!
One evening Allan Bullock鈥檚 Grandma was leaning out of her upstairs window talking to a neighbour across the street, when a missile, bomb, landmine, who knows, sailed by, between them, yes between them, and landed in a field beyond.
Grandpa went up to the field to see what had happened and came rushing back saying, there is a big hole in the field, but that is not all, the shire horse that was in the field was now in the next field! Since the field in which the bomb landed had a hedge all round, did the horse get blown over, did the adrenalin rush give the horse super human power, they never discovered.
Later a dogfight further up the valley came very close, with German planes flying very low, Grandma and Mother yelling for them to take cover, the evacuee children did but the local kids just stood and watched!
A man in a field nearby had a remarkable escape when bombs ditched in haste to escape fell either side of him. An Uncle and his Grandpa legged it back to the village from where they had been working, fearing it had all been destroyed, happily not the case.
Allan鈥檚 mum was returning home and at the railway station was offered a lift by an American soldier, who on passing his base and being hailed by an officer said 鈥淚鈥檒l be back shortly, I am just taking my gal home鈥, can you imagine!
His father was in the army in North Africa and was hailed by a neighbour who had spotted Bettws-y-Coed written on his lorry.
