I was in the ATS during the war and the funniest thing that happened was this:

Field Marshall Montgomery came to visit our section. He was very small in stature and I was very nervous as he walked over to me to ask me a question. I gave him a very smart salute and said ‘Yes M’ame’ in answer. He looked at me a bit strange but didn’t say anything, luckily he looked quite amused! I don’t think anyone had ever called him that before!
