I joined the WAAF to be a transport driver after my boyfriend Reg Stephens was shot down with all his crew over Berlin in October 1940. They are buried in the RAF War Cemetery at Charlottenberg, Berlin. I have visited the cemetery several times.
My friend ‘joined up’ with me and she later married a New Zealand pilot and now lives in Auckland.
Later I was in ‘Civvy Billets’ in Morecombe and can remember square bashing in the snow on the sea front!
Then to Raf Weeton where I was in the cookhouse peeling potatoes and waiting for a MT course in Blackpool. I had already passed my driving test but was told I had to it ‘their way!’
After another job — cleaning hundreds of greasy tins in the Tin Room — I eventually went on the MT course and passed it driving around Lancashire.
I was then posted to Worcester and billeted in the workhouse, it was super as we had radiators to dry our clothes on!
We drove Fordson lorries to collect rations, ambulances, and staff cars for the officers.
I ended up in RAF Great Witcombe and am still in touch with many of the friends I made during my time with the WAAF.
