A Nurse鈥檚 Memories in South Wales
I was living in Cardiff during the war. I got married in 1942 when I was just finishing my midwifery training. After I finished training, I had a children鈥檚 ward, and we had lots and lots of children from Birmingham who had been evacuated to Cardiff because it was supposed to be a safe place, but then we started having air raids and it was very badly bombed. My husband was the curate in the church where I was going and he sometimes had as many as twenty or thirty burials in a day. We had to take all the children down to the air raid shelter every night.
My husband and I had a very quiet wedding because everything was rationed then. From Cardiff we moved up to Cwmbach, a little village just outside Aberdare, and my husband was still involved then in taking the news to parishioners whose husbands had died in the war. That was hard.
