Harry Keeble`s story is written by Marlon Nkuni.
We were confined to camps at Waterlooville and then we embarked from New Haven on the early hours of the 5th of June. We were on a tank infantry landing craft and I remember being very seasick because of the very choppy seas.
We landed on Sword beach and I remember the incredible noise and the bullets whistling overhead. I was carrying one end of a stretcher but which end, I don't remember. Our orders were to not pick up any casualties from the beach as this was already being done by one of our units. That was very upsetting as we had to run past very wounded men.
Our orders were to proceed to a position inland and set up a field dressing station which consisted of four surgeons. We were treating the very badly
wounded which we did for the first two days and as the battle proceeded, we were then looking after the minor wounded. This was in a place called Hermanville and my memory is of the three military policemen who had been killed by a sniper who turned out to be a Frenchwoman who was married to a German.
This was really upsetting because the policemen were a part of the Royal Military police unit who had been guarding our camp at Hermanville and so we knew them very well.
