My father was commander of a tank convoy having to quickley get through a busy Cairo . The inhabitants known then by soldiers as wogs tended to get in the way and it was difficult to get through them . There was a war on so they had to simple as that . One of the tanks by accident knocked into a young lad . Everything stopped , the lad died and of course all let let loose which you would expect anywhere i suppose . Dad thought , this is no good we need to get on . The senior man stepped forward and spoke to my father in arab . He wanted payment or no quick getaway as people blocked the road screaming and crying .Father decided it was time to offer goats or sheep in exchange and to make up for the loss of the child , which is what the arabs wanted really.
This meant squabling over how many when and what . In the end it was goats 20 in number .
Luckily the army knew where to get these and this was done quickly . I think the convoy carried on but had to leave a jeep or small armoured car until payment of the goats was quickley made . Of course once the arabs knew they were getting goats they were pleased and that is the way they are , its just their way of doing things out there , or was in ww2 .
Alls well and dad and his convoy continued on to fight another of Montys battles .
