Sidney David Sinnett from Swindon, Wiltshire, first joined up on 16.10.39. at the age of 21 and went to 74 Infantry Motor Unit, Colchester. When he went to war he was a Rifleman in the K.R.R. 6 Company 8 Section his rank being RFN. During the Defence of Calais in May 1940 he was captured and ended up in Stalag XX1B, Marienburg, East Prussia. After being originally posted as "Missing" on 6 June 1940 the family were notified he was a PoW on 25 June 1940. He was then moved to Stalag V11B, Teschen, Poland and at a later date went to Stalag X11A at Limburg. He was a violinist and played with three other men at camp socials etc. One with an accordion, one with a guitar and one a trumpet.
November 1942 Stalag VIII B, Alan on accordian, Bill Page guitar, Dixie Dean trumpet and Sid violin.
There are also photos of the RR band with Bas next to Sid + Wilf and Les on trumpets.
At last there was a telegram 10 May 1945 saying
"Arrived safely, see you soon - Sid"
I have many letters from the various camps and photos too.
Unfortunately he died last year

Posted on: 22 March 2004 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

Dear lostshylea

How very interesting, particularly so in that you have details of various camps which held your uncle.

I look forwars to hearing more.

Kind regards,

Peter

Message 1 - Stalag XXA

My father, Lewis Edwards, was also at Stalag XXA and on the death march. I am trying to find out more information about other PoWs specifically at this camp. My father also played violin and was camp tailor but I'm unsure if this was at A or B camp.

I have some information on a site I have set up at About links I wonder if you will recognise any of the names or people in the photographs? I would be interested to hear from you and can be contacted via this site or via the Contact button on my site (to try and avoid any more spam!).
Merry Christmas and kind regards

Message 1 - prisoner of war in Poland

Posted on: 11 March 2005 by Trefnis

First a small clarification. However sad I am to tell this in 1940 there was no Poland. It was swipped of the map in 1939 when the war started and didn't appear again until 1945. The only Poland you can speak about was in London where Polish government stayed until 1989. Normally I wouldn't think such a correction is needed but unfortunately I've already heard people who assumed that the nazis where Poles just because the III Reich chose to incorporate terrains belonging to Poland.

And I've heard about those 'orchestras' in KZs. Some even think that because of them Aliants had for a long time trouble to believe what KZs were really like. After all the music was playing... It's fascinating and at the same time terrible how such a smal detail can affect lives of hundreds of people.
