Grandad's Story
In the war I worked in the steel industry whitch was a reserved occupation this mean't that I did not join the Army. We were needed to make thing's for the army such as Bailey Bridges and Pontoons. Instead we joined the Local Defense Volunteer's (LDV),some people said this stood for Look Duck and Vanish. In the home guard we spent every sixth night on guard duty, we were there to make sure that nobody blew up the roads, and to look out for German airman who might have been shot down. Sometimes we had exercise against the real army, trying to defend against tanks using flower bag's as Grenades. If we hit one of the tank's you could see where the flour was on the side of the tank.We were given a lee Enfield 300 rifle with 5 bullet's,and a bayonet. We are always very tied, working all day and then training or doing guard duty or exercises at night. Most times we diddn't get to bed until after midnight and had to get up again at 6 o'clock in the morning.
