My father, Bert Friston, was an engine driver on the Great Western Railway from the 1930's until he retired in 1971.
During the blitz he was on shunting duties at Old Oak Common railway depot moving goods wagons to their required positions.
The air raid warning sounded and he and his fireman dived off the engine and took cover under neighbouring freight wagons.
Bombs were dropping all around them for what felt like hours (though it probably wasn't).
Eventually the all clear went and they crawled out from their place of "safety" to find that my father had selected a wagon on which was written "EXPLOSIVES".
