My father went into the RAF when I was 6 months old. He came home on leave from time to time and always wore his RAF uniform. One day, when I was about 4 or 5, I remember him sitting at our dining table drinking a cup of tea when the handle, which had been glued back on, came off and the tea spilled all over his jacket and trousers. He went upstairs to change and came back down wearing ordinary clothes. I never remember seeing him in ordinary clothes before and, to me, he looked so strange. I had always pictured my Daddy as an RAF man and it was a shock to see him as something else.
This is one of my vivid memories of the war.
